It’s All in the Mixing: Beginner Oil with Addren Doss

Workshop Supply List

Beginner Oil with a Limited Palette
You really can make magic with Red, Blue, Yellow and White!  This two-day oil painting workshop for beginners will focus on creating a painting filled with beautiful color and light using just the three primaries plus white.   Let Addren Doss show you how you can take four tubes of oil paint and create an oil  painting filled with beautiful color harmony.

On the first day of this workshop we will talk about the supplies and how to take care of them.  You will be mixing color and learning about the terms “warm and cool”.  You will learn what the term “value” means and why it is so important to your painting.  You will learn about composition while making small sketches in black, white, and grey.

On the second day of this workshop you will put into practice what you learned on day one by creating a small landscape painting from a photo reference.  You will have your choice of a landscape with a small barn, or a garden scene with a sun-lit urn.

Each day Addren will demonstrate the lessons, and then give you plenty of help at the easel as you work towards a better understanding of how to work with the wonderful medium of oil paint.

“For me, plein air painting is about recording my emotional reaction to a specific place at a specific time of day.  The studio painting that may come from that experience is an extension of the intense feelings and reactions I had when painting outside.” — Addren Doss

The goal of Addren Doss is to engage viewers emotionally by creating representational light filled paintings with intense colors and strong value patterns.  Her oil and pastel paintings are filled with bold brush and knife work, and passages of pure clean color.  One viewer recently said, “I feel a part of the landscape, the sun on my face, and the wind in my hair when looking at your paintings.”  Another said “I feel like I can reach out and touch your animals”.

Addren spent the first twenty years of her art career as a graphic designer doing corporate and freelance work.  In 1990 she decided to follow her true passion, and began her career as a painter.  Over the years she has studied with many noted American artists.  Now she feels the need and responsibility to share what she has learned by teaching classes and workshops in oil and pastel, which she has been doing for over 12 years.

Addren is a Master Signature Member of Women Artists of the West, Associate Member of the Pastel Society of America, Founding and Charter Member of the Piedmont Outdoor Painting Society, Member of Excellence of the Southeastern Pastel Society, and member of the Pastel Society of North Carolina.  She is represented by Tyler White O’Brien Gallery, Greensboro, North Carolina; and Peacock Alley, Chapel Hill, North Carolina.  Her work can be found in many private and corporate collections across the country and internationally.  She and her husband live in Greensboro, North Carolina.
