Plein Air with Chad Smith (612CS)
June 12-14, 2017
9 am – 4 pm
Plein Air Concepts
Please join me for a 3 day plein air workshop in beautiful western North Carolina. This workshop will be practical in nature with a focus on your needs and goals. Our time together will include demonstrations, presentations, group critiques, discussion, and lots of painting time with personal easel critique.
All levels and all mediums are invited. I intend to give you time-tested tools and concepts that transcend medium! But don’t worry, I have experience in oil, watercolor, acrylic, ink, pastel and dry mediums to work on those technical issues as well. Practical issues will be addressed such as:
- Deciding what to paint (and why to paint it!)
- Composition (get this right and you’re home-free)
- Visual tools (shape ,value, edges, color)
- A logical procedure (why re-invent the wheel?)
- Knowing when to stop (just the right amount of detail)
Chad Smith grew up in rural Indiana developing an unshakeable appreciation for the outdoors. Inspired by the specificity of light and weather conditions found outdoors, the artist devotes himself to the pursuit of painting en plein air. It has been said the artist’s work is “Not just ‘a scene,’ but a real statement about something, yet not forced or melodramatic.”
Smith won Best of Show honors in the Finger Lakes Plein Air Festival and Upstate Invitational with multiple solo exhibitions in New York and Colorado. He earned a BA in drawing and painting from the State University of New York and an MFA in painting from the Academy of Art University. Smith is currently represented Naples Florida, Charleston South Carolina, Blowing Rock and Hillsboro North Carolina, Saratoga and Old Forge New York.
