This two-day plein air workshop will be a little different that the usual workshops at The Florence Thomas Art School.  This workshop will offer instruction by three different artists in three different mediums at the same time.  Addren Doss will teach pastel, Amy Evans will teach oil, and Julie Hayes will teach watercolor.  The workshop will take place in Creston, NC on the bank of the north fork of the New River at a beautiful private property with a cabin, gardens, beautiful views of the mountains, and the river.

On the first morning all three artists will give a short talk about their gear, medium, and plein air painting.  Then the group will split up by medium for a short plein air demonstration on different parts of the property.  The students are then free to create their own paintings anywhere on the property.  Your teacher will be available for help as needed. Day two will start with a short demonstration by the artist you are working with and then the students are free to paint anywhere on the property.  Your teacher will be available for help as needed.

Pastel Workshop

This 2-day pastel plein air workshop is for all levels of pastel painters, but not suggested for absolute beginners.   We will discuss materials, different plein air setups, and different types of supports.  We will talk about choosing your subject matter and how to simplify it by making a small thumbnail value study before you begin the painting.  Addren will then demonstrate how she gets the painting started with an underpainting before moving into full color.  Each day she will demonstrate a different type of underpainting before beginning a painting, and will work on a different surface each day.  The first day she will work on UART sanded paper and on the second day she will work on Ampersand Pastel Board.

After the short demonstration each morning, you will be free to spend the rest of the day creating your own painting(s) with Addren’s help as needed.

“For me, plein air painting is about recording my emotional reaction to a specific place at a specific time of day.  The studio painting that may come from that experience is an extension of the intense feelings and reactions I had when painting outside.” — Addren Doss

The goal of Addren Doss is to engage viewers emotionally by creating representational light filled paintings with intense colors and strong value patterns.  Her oil and pastel paintings are filled with bold brush and knife work, and passages of pure clean color.  One viewer recently said, “I feel a part of the landscape, the sun on my face, and the wind in my hair when looking at your paintings.”  Another said “I feel like I can reach out and touch your animals”.

Addren spent the first twenty years of her art career as a graphic designer doing corporate and freelance work.  In 1990 she decided to follow her true passion, and began her career as a painter.  Over the years she has studied with many noted American artists.  Now she feels the need and responsibility to share what she has learned by teaching classes and workshops in oil and pastel, which she has been doing for over 12 years.

Addren is a Master Signature Member of Women Artists of the West, Founding and Charter Member of the Piedmont Outdoor Painting Society, and member of the Pastel Society of North Carolina.  She is represented by O’Brien Gallery in Greensboro, North Carolina.  Her work can be found in many private and corporate collections across the country and internationally.  She and her husband live in Greensboro, North Carolina.
