This two-day plein air workshop will be a little different that the usual workshops at The Florence Thomas Art School.  This workshop will offer instruction by three different artists in three different mediums at the same time.  Addren Doss will teach pastel, Amy Evans will teach oil, and Julie Hayes will teach watercolor.  The workshop will take place in Creston, NC on the bank of the north fork of the New River at a beautiful private property with a cabin, gardens, beautiful views of the mountains, and the river.

On the first morning all three artists will give a short talk about their gear, medium, and plein air painting.  Then the group will split up by medium for a short plein air demonstration on different parts of the property.  The students are then free to create their own paintings anywhere on the property.  Your teacher will be available for help as needed.

Day two will start with a short demonstration by the artist you are working with and then the students are free to paint anywhere on the property.  Your teacher will be available for help as needed.

Watercolor Workshop

In this two day workshop Julie will discuss materials and setups for painting plein air watercolors in a non-traditional way on gesso-coated surfaces. She will demonstrate her plein air setup, process  of selecting a subject and applying her techniques for paint application and manipulation to build up layers of colors and “pull out” the highlights to create a rich and vibrant painting.  She will also explain how to finish the paintings for preservation and framing.

Each day after a short demonstration students will then find their subject of choice and spend the rest of the day painting. Julie will be available for help and guidance as needed.

Julie Gowing Hayes

“I can never get enough of the beauty I find in nature. . . the sunlight drifting through leaves to highlight some small flower that otherwise may have gone unnoticed . . . the exquisite harmony of a subtle color palette that blends into a beautiful composition . . . all accompanied by birdsong and fresh air.   Painting for me is an emotional response to my surroundings and an attempt to capture a fleeting moment in time to share with others who may not have the privilege to experience it firsthand. ” – Julie Hayes

Julie’s plein air affiliations include being a Charter Member/Co-founder of Piedmont Outdoor Painting Society (POPS), member of Plein Air Painters of the Ozarks (PAPO). Hayes is an signature member of Women Artists of the West (WAOW)
