GENERAL INFORMATION AND POLICIES

If you love color, movement, and texture this workshop is for you!  Even non-oil painters will come away with a new understanding of composition and how to build color relationships.

In this workshop we will be working on ultrasmooth cradled panels and building paintings with many layers using oil paint and Gamblin Cold Wax Medium.  Some of these layers will show through at the end and some will not, but all will add to the finished product.  We will be using non-traditional tools such as squeeges and brayers along with various mark making tools and stencils.  Students are encouraged to play and experiment in this workshop. Composition, strong value relationships and color harmony will be emphasized.

I will introduce you to some of my favorite abstract painters and we will discuss their compositions and color harmonies. We will talk about how to build a strong composition and how to be free to let the painting lead you in the direction it wants to go.

   Students need to provide boxes or canvas carries to transport the wet panels

  “For me, plein air painting is about recording my emotional reaction to a specific place at a specific time of day.  The studio painting that may come from that experience is an extension of the intense feelings and reactions I had when painting outside.” — Addren Doss

  The goal of Addren Doss is to engage viewers emotionally by creating representational light filled paintings with intense colors and strong value patterns.  Her oil and pastel paintings are filled with bold brush and knife work, and passages of pure clean color.  One viewer recently said, “I feel a part of the landscape, the sun on my face, and the wind in my hair when looking at your paintings.”  Another said “I feel like I can reach out and touch your animals”.

  Addren spent the first twenty years of her art career as a graphic designer doing corporate and freelance work.  In 1990 she decided to follow her true passion, and began her career as a painter.  Over the years she has studied with many noted American artists.  Now she feels the need and responsibility to share what she has learned by teaching classes and workshops in oil and pastel, which she has been doing for over 12 years.

  Addren is a Master Signature Member of Women Artists of the West, Founding and Charter Member of the Piedmont Outdoor Painting Society, and member of the Pastel Society of North Carolina.  She is represented by O’Brien Gallery in Greensboro, North Carolina.  Her work can be found in many private and corporate collections across the country and internationally.  She and her husband live in Greensboro, North Carolina.
