Perhaps you have a collection of ties that belonged to your father or spouse. Imagine what a wonderful useable keepsake you will make using their ties for a chair caning project. Or perhaps you have the odd round-railed chair hanging around that could use a face-lift? Michael will lead the class in chair caning using ties for a fun and unique new look.

If you plan on refinishing the chair that needs to be completed prior to caning or if you choose to repaint your chair that can be completed after the class with the exception of the round-rails.

For $35 (due the day of class) the instructor will prepare and provide the ties or this is the perfect up-cycling project for any inherited family ties…see the directions above!

Round railed chairs or footstools (the required style for this class) that need re-caning can be found at local thrift and antique stores, small rocking chairs that need the seat replaced are allowed.

Workshop Teacher

Michael Dees, Master Caner – Moved to the Blue Ridge Mountains of southwest Virginia from the sand hills of North Carolina in the late 70’s, became immersed in Appalachian culture and realized that many of the cultural traditions were dying at an alarming rate.  He learned seven step caning from a local couple, studied and researched various patterns and materials used in chair weaving, and after 35 years and hundreds of chair seats, he has become a Master Caner, one of less than 100 in the United States.
