715MD: Chair Caning with Michael Dees

Herringbone Pattern
Level: Beginner

Student Supplied Materials:
One round railed chair (see below)
Students will need scissors, an office sized stapler with staples, needle-nosed pliers, two spring loaded clamps (no screw clamps),a non-serrated blunt-nosed knife and midsize flat head screwdriver

Do you have a family chair that needs re-caning? Or have you had the desire to learn the art of  this heritage craft which had been passed down through generations? Students will learn and complete the 3 x 3 Herringbone pattern using 1/2 inch flat reed. The Herringbone pattern is one of the easiest caning patterns to complete.

All caning materials will be provided

Round railed chairs are the required style for this class. No rocking chairs please. Round railed chairs that need re-caning can be found at local thrift and antique stores.
