At one time quilts were born of necessity- keeping families warm and comfortable on cold nights.  As time passed and more materials were available, the quilts became cherished heirlooms.  Barn Quilts are much the same – they are a statement, a symbol of identity whether you are a traditionalist or prefer a more modern twist in your design.  Join Mark in recreating either a 2′ x 2′ or a 3′ x 3′ Quilt Square of your own.  Patterns and other materials provided after registration. Day two (9:30-12:30) is an open studio time for those that need to finish their quilts.

If you choose to create a 3’x 3′ barn quilt please call the Art School  (336-846-3827) to pay the difference and reserve your board.

Wear painting clothes and comfortable shoes for standing! We use exterior latex paint and it does not come out of clothes.

Seeking a new direction after an extensive career in broadcasting, Mark Perzel moved to Ashe County in 2016.A short but fun-filled stint as a Circulation Assistant at the Ashe County Library led into a new career in the aerospace industry as a CNC machinist. When not spinning heavy metal into jet engine parts, Mark enjoys expanding his creativity with art and gardening. Very soon after arriving in the High Country he began to take classes at the Florence Thomas Art School and fell in love with designing and creating barn quilts. He has created barn quilts for his entire family, was commissioned to design and execute a barn star for the doorway of a century-old farmhouse in Elkin, and has his own personal collection on the outbuildings of the nearly 130-year-old farm where he lives in Jefferson. His designs are inspired by the hex signs and barn stars he witnessed on Amish barns along the Pennsylvania Turnpike and in Ohio.
