$300
All Levels (with basic experience)
Supply List Here

Debra Keirce has long been inspired by the master oil painters of old. Spend three whole days with her, learning the process she uses to create realistic artwork, based on the successes of generations. In this workshop, Debra shares everything. Students will learn how to create copies of master paintings. But it won’t stop there. Everyone will be encouraged to take this knowledge and put their own spin upon it, laying the foundation for future successful paintings..

Day 1: We will discuss the various ways to either copy master works, or use specific parts of it to create our own versions inspired by it. We’ll do some studies and experiments that will help us notice things we may have otherwise overlooked.

Day 2: We’ll delve into the basic concepts, and learn how to paint realistically, whether you paint people, pets, architecture, landscapes, seascapes or still life, the principles are the same.

Day 3: We should be able to finish a significant portion of our master copy – at least enough to be able to attempt more complicated projects in the future. Everyone will leave with hands on instruction for how to go about creating their own masterpieces.

We will be working from photographs for this workshop. This is a painting workshop, and we don’t want you to be distracted by drawing mistakes. So, we will work from drawings provided for you.

Workshop Teacher

Debra Keirce

Originally from Detroit, Michigan, Debra has painted realistic fine art since the 1980’s when she worked as a biochemical engineer in New England.  In 2010, she turned her passion for the visual arts into a full time career. Her art is created in a classical realism style here in her Northern Virginia studios.

Debra paints themes that resonate deeply with her. She honors the golden age artists of the 17th century with traditional renditions of still life, landscape and portraiture. Their classical realism teachings are the foundation for her oil painting process. She embraces the vintage and surreal. There is beauty in the aging and broken people, places and things around us. Oddities are worthy of contemplation. Travel across America inspires Debra.  The vistas, faces and history of her country are a joy to paint.

Keirce’s miniature fine art and hidden painting series offer atypical ways to interact with her art. Centuries ago, paintings were often in cupboards or under curtains until people leaned in to view them. She finds that some art is more precious when you put effort into seeing it close up and personal. In these ways, Deb offers art that is visual and experiential. If you love her oil paintings they love you back.

Debra’s work has earned her a long resume. It is in private, museum and corporate collections across the globe, including the USA, Japan, Belize, France, England. She holds signature memberships in over a dozen prestigious societies including Copley Society of Art (as well as their juried portrait registry,) Salmagundi Club, International Guild of Realism, American Women Artists, National Oil and Acrylic Painters Society, Southwest Artists Inc., and the American Artist Professional League. Debra Keirce is a master artist, member of The Art Renewal Center, the US Coast Guard Art Program, and Miniature Artists of America.  She has representation at five fine art venues across the country, including Florence Thomas Art School. She considers each of her awards, signature memberships, museum acquisitions, published features and interviews to be affirmations along her art journey. Explore Deb’s website to see the palm sized miniature art she creates under magnification. Then browse the larger works, up to four feet tall. While her subject matter varies, every painting has a job. It makes your heart smile. Can you feel the breeze? Do you hear the birds chirping? Can you relate to the mood on that face? Do you want to lean in and smell that flower or taste that grape? Good. Mission accomplished.
