2020 Have a Heart Raffle pet portrait by Kelly Cameron

Kelly Cameron is a local artist, instructor, and BOD member at Florence Thomas Art School.  This is her second year donating a custom pet portrait to support the Ashe Humane Society.

Kelly is a self-taught artist who grew up in Elizabeth City, NC.  She moved to the mountains of NC in 2014, where she works in her home studio and teaches all ages and levels.

Kelly was exposed to art at a young age by her mother who was an avid artist as well as her older brother Phillip.  After working as a teacher assistant and raising her children, Kelly operated her own studio and gallery in Elizabeth City.  Kelly works in many mediums, with a passion for mixed media, collage, and acrylic.  Her style varies, but tends to be playful and explorative of different mediums and techniques.

Maya Angelou once said, “We write for the same reason that we walk, talk, climb mountains or swim the oceans – because we can. We have some impulse within us that makes us want to explain ourselves to other human beings. That’s why we paint, that’s why we dare to love someone – because we have the impulse to explain who we are.”

“That quote very much describes how I feel about art, it is my passion, so much so that to me it’s more of a verb than a noun. I learn something every time I wet a brush, and that is what makes the desire to paint and create so strong in me.”
