What is the stART Children's Program?
Florence Thomas Art School has proudly led the stART Children’s Program since 2016.
This initiative provides 3rd grade students at all three Ashe County elementary schools with access to quality art materials and creative experiences. We also extend the program to homeschoolers in the same age group, offering opportunities through Florence Thomas Art School alongside our public school presentations. Through stART, we are dedicated to nurturing creativity and supporting arts education across our community.
What is inside the bag of supplies?
Each 3rd grade student receives a bag of high-quality art supplies, thoughtfully selected in collaboration with their school art teachers. In past years, students have received materials such as a watercolor paper pad, watercolor set, brushes, colored pencils, and drawing tools. These supplies are used during classroom activities and are then taken home at the end of the school year to continue encouraging creativity beyond the classroom.
Why are we passionate about this program?
Access to the arts plays a vital role in child development, strengthening motor skills, language development, decision-making, visual learning, cultural awareness, and overall academic performance. As a Tier 2 county, Ashe County’s elementary schools benefit greatly from additional resources and support. Programs like stART help empower our educators by providing the materials and opportunities needed to bring meaningful art experiences to their students.
