Lori Hill

Exhibiting Artist

Lori's paintings are representational narratives which mark memories and moments of her journey growing up and growing older in a small-town, southern mountain culture. The images are allegories for experiences, relationships and stereotypes--a way to materialize responses to things real and imagined. She feels that she can best express her ideas figuratively, but Images from nature, particularly animals, and flowers, almost always emerge as symbols for meaning.  Lori has a strong affiliation with nature, having spent much time hiking and exploring trails and woods growing up in the mountains. Her artwork develops as she reworks the composition and refines her intention. There are usually several versions of one final image underneath each painting. She is captivated by layering media (printed paper, ink, paint) and then scratching and scraping back into the layers to reveal traces of images and colors underneath. Lori Hill’s roots are in the mountains of North Carolina. She grew up and lives in Boone and has raised four children there. She earned a BS in Art Education from Appalachian State University and taught studio art for thirty-five years at Watauga High School and Appalachian State. Since retiring, working in her studio is a priority. She is represented by Carlton Gallery in Banner Elk NC. She exhibits regionally and her work has been juried into several exhibitions including the North Carolina Artists Exhibition at the Contemporary Art Museum in Raleigh in 2024 and 2025.

Using a variety of mediums, and often combining them, Sandra’s art pieces come to life with acrylics, colored pencils, graphite, and ink. Three of Sandra’s current focuses are her American Wildlife series, which includes both ink and graphite works, her growing Sepia Tones series of acrylic canvases, and her most recent series of coastal inspired large canvases. Sandra has exhibited and taught art in her previous homes in Kansas, Texas, New Mexico, and North Carolina. She divides her time between public art (murals, mosaics), studio practice, exhibitions, and teaching.

Kammerlohr Bio photo.jpg

Sean Kammerlohr

Sean Kammerlohr is a painter based in Winston-Salem who uses oils in the studio and acrylics when painting en plein air to achieve his style of exaggerated realism where both colors and light are amplified. In his plein air work, of which this exhibit is exclusively comprised, he tries to capture one moment on that particular day. He adds the date to the title to invite the viewer to experience this captured moment in the context of their own lives.

In his studio work, his exaggerated realism is often paired with a slight anthropomorphization, lending human attributes to elements of Nature. He does this to challenge the notion that Nature is somehow “less than” or “other.” He believes that viewing Nature as a living, breathing Being as deserving of life as we are will encourage society to adopt more environmentally responsible behaviors.
